The Sleepless City

Things to See and Do

Cairo, also known as the City of a Thousand Minarets, is the capital of Egypt, with a population of over 16 million, and is one of the largest cities in both Africa and the Middle East. It also ranks nineteenth in the world, and among the most densely populated cities in the world.

Cairo on the Nile is famous for its history preserved in the magnificent medieval Islamic city and Coptic sites in Old Cairo. The Egyptian Museum is a must, with countless Egyptian artifacts, as is the shopping at Khan El Khalili Bazaar.

Although closely related to the past, Cairo is also home to a vibrant, modern society. The Tahrir Square, located in the center of Cairo, which was built in the nineteenth century under the rule of Khedive Ismail, sought to be "Paris on the Nile". There are also a number of modern suburbs including Maadi and Heliopolis, while Zamalek is a quiet area on the island, with upscale shopping. Cairo is best in fall or spring, when it's not hot. A felucca trip on the Nile is a good way to escape the busy city, as well as a visit to the Al-Azhar Park.
